With more than 94,000 ballots returned as of 10:10 p.m., the third round of election results for Douglas County’s special election show that a majority of voters are not in favor of the home rule initiative. 

According to the Douglas County website, 71.16% have voted no to form a home rule charter commission and 28.84% have voted yes. 

Voters also had the choice to vote for up to nine people to serve on the home rule commission if the initiative passes. This includes three people to serve at-large and six people in their respective district. 

For the candidates at-large, Angela Thomas is in the lead with 35,501 (20.43%) votes. 

In order of how they’re listed on the ballot, here are the votes cast for the following at-large candidates: 

  • Kevin Van Winkle: 23,464 (13.50%)
  • George Teal: 21,494 (12.37%)
  • Abe Laydon: 20,939 (12.05%)
  • Steve Johnson: 31,807 (18.88%)
  • Mindy Bandimere-Jordan: 8,979 (5.17%)
  • Steve Boand: 30,626 (17.62%)

In District 1, Julie Gooden leads with 7,776 (9.39%) votes.

In order of how they’re listed on the ballot, votes for the other District 1 candidates are as follows: 

  • Matthew M. Lunn: 7,556 (9.13%)
  • David Weaver: 6,286 (7.59%)
  • Mary H. Lynch: 2,060 (2.49%)
  • Emily Roth Suyat: 7,623 (9.21%)
  • Jack Hilbert: 5,806 (7.01%)
  • Jason Hamel: 7,087 (8.56%)
  • Darren Weekly: 6,348 (7.67%)
  • October Ann Levy: 7,338 (8.86%)
  • Jack Gilmartin: 5,238 (6.33%)
  • Toby Damisch: 5,129 (6.19%)
  • Laura Hefta: 5,829 (7.04%)
  • Irene Bonham: 7,511 (9.07%)
  • Bart Dorscheid: 1,218 (1.47%)

In District 2, Kevin Leung leads with 12,075 (9.83%) votes.

In order of how they’re listed on the ballot, votes for the other District 2 candidates are as follows: 

  • Jennifer E. Green: 10,513 (8.56%)
  • Jae Mundt: 8,493 (6.91%)
  • Charles O’Reilly: 9,923 (8.08%)

  • Max Brooks: 9,982 (8.12%)
  • Tom J. Wiens: 9,960 (8.11%)

  • Douglas John Gilbert: 9,801 (7.98%)
  • Dave Gill: 9,541 (7.77%)

In District 3, Rep. Bob Marshall (D-Highlands Ranch) leads with 14,562 (11.66%) votes.

  • Monica A. Wasden: 6,760 (5.41%)
  • Matthew Burcham: 6,336 (5.07%)
  • Ted Harvey: 6,864 (5.50%)
  • Susan Meek: 8,636 (6.92%)
  • Lee Hudson Frame: 10,258 (8.21%)
  • Daniel Brown: 5,768 (4.62%)
  • Gordon B. (Spud) Van de Water: 12,072 (9.67%)
  • SuJeanne Foster: 1,772 (1.42%)

While the last round of results posted on Election Night generally reflect the vast majority of the ballots cast, Douglas County said counting votes will not be complete as there are other ballots such as those from overseas that need to be counted. 

Certification of final results is expected on July 8.
