DENVER, Colo. (July 1, 2025) — The America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission recognizes this Fourth of July as the start of the one-year countdown to the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This moment kicks off the final stretch toward 2026, when Colorado will also celebrate its 150th anniversary as the Centennial State. This once-in-a-generation commemoration invites every Coloradan to unite in pride and purpose as we honor our shared past and look ahead together.

Established by Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado General Assembly, the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission is leading the celebrations and commemorations occasioned by this historic milestone. As outlined in the establishing legislation, an important component of the Commission’s charge is identifying, celebrating, and building knowledge around the contributions and histories of Black communities, Indigenous communities, communities of color, women, and people with disabilities in the development of both the United States and Colorado, including histories that predate the founding of the nation and the state.

“This is more than an anniversary, it’s a call to come together as one Colorado,” said Commission Co-Chair Nathan Richie, Director of the Golden History Museum & Park. “As we look ahead to 2026, we invite every community, business, and individual to join in honoring what makes our state special and work together to build a future we can all be proud of.”

Why Participate?

The America 250 – Colorado 150 commemoration is designed to serve the people of Colorado by:

  • Bringing communities together through inclusive events and storytelling
  • Highlighting local and statewide contributions to Colorado’s 150-year journey
  • Inspiring Coloradans of all ages to engage with our shared history and shape what comes next

Whether through hosting local events, partnering on commemorative projects, volunteering, or contributing to signature initiatives, every Coloradan is invited to play a role in this celebration. The Commission provides tools, resources, and official branding to help communities, businesses, schools, and organizations engage in ways that reflect their own unique stories and strengths.

What’s Next?

In honor of the official countdown, Coloradans can expect a growing calendar of public programs, educational initiatives, and community events that will culminate in 2026. Signature initiatives include a statewide drone show series, a digital passport highlighting Colorado destinations, educational opportunities, traveling exhibitions, and community grants that encourage local participation.

About the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commemoration

The America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission is leading Colorado’s commemoration of 150 years of statehood and 250 years of American independence in 2026. Established by Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado General Assembly, the Commission brings together leaders from across the state to guide this historic milestone. Through its campaign, “The View From Here,” the Commission invites all Coloradans to reflect on our shared history and imagine the future, recognizing Colorado’s unique legacy as the only state founded on the nation’s 100th birthday in 1876. Working alongside state agencies, regional Advisory Panels, and local communities, the Commission will showcase signature initiatives, educational programs, exhibits, and community-led events to inspire engagement statewide. In the face of weakening public health resources and guidance, a group of local Colorado volunteers are offering health and safety information to help fill the void. They use the social media account “Mask Together Colorado” to provide data, info, and alerts on viral surges, wildfire smoke, and vaccine access, combined with techniques and tips on how we can protect ourselves, help reduce downtime from illness, and prevent long term damage to our health.

“There is a particular void of public health information about the importance of breathing clean air at the moment,” says CSU professor Maria Gillespie, a spokesperson for the local group and board member of the national organization Mask Together America. “We learned from the pandemic that viruses can travel through the air like smoke, and that simple tools like air purifiers can go a long way in protecting our lungs from not just viruses, but wildfire smoke and air pollution as well. We understand the importance of cleaning the water supply, but what about clean air?”

Mask Together Colorado is holding a free Clean Air Panel in July that is open to the public, featuring expert panelists Dr. Jose Luis-Jimenez (Aerosol scientist, CU Boulder), Fiona Gau (Public health expert), and Stephanie Williams (Community activist). The panel will be held Tuesday, July 8 from 6-7 PM at the Park Lane Condominiums at 460 S Marion Parkway, Building B in Denver. It will also be streamed in hybrid mode on Zoom, with a registration form for the link, at https://bit.ly/3ZpuKz3.

“I hope we can help everyone access better tools and data for staying healthy in this day and age,” says Susan, another organizer in the group, whose caregiving role means that she cannot afford to ignore such issues. “Coloradans deserve the freedom to make choices that protect their health and their loved ones, and that includes access to vaccines, the right to wear a mask, access to data, and telehealth options. We’re fighting for those rights.”

Coloradans have new opportunities to experience dramatic Pacific Ocean beaches, lush coastal forests, unlimited outdoor adventures and an escape from the crowds now that United Airlines has launched daily nonstop flights between Denver and the Southern Oregon Coast. The flights, which began in May, run daily between Denver International Airport and the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend, Oregon, through October 29, 2025. These flights provide convenient access for travelers to enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty, outdoor activities, charming coastal communities and stunning scenery that defines this singular stretch of the Oregon Coast.

“From spectacular coastal cliffs and towering sand dunes to world-class fishing, golfing, mountain biking, hiking, forest bathing, scenic drives, dining and more, this section of the Oregon Coast has so much to offer travelers from Colorado,” said Janice Langlinais, Executive Director of the Coos Bay-North Bend-Charleston Visitor and Convention Bureau, more commonly known as Oregon’s Adventure Coast. “Having direct, daily flights from Denver to North Bend offers a convenient way for folks to come straight to this West Coast paradise and enjoy everything that makes it a one-of-a-kind destination.”

The new daily three-hour flights, operated by SkyWest dba United Express, bypass a layover in San Francisco, making travel easier and faster for warm-weather visitors heading from Denver to Oregon’s Adventure Coast. The more temperate region, about three-and-a-half hours away from the hustle and bustle of Portland, has gained renown for its awe-inspiring scenery, endless activities and unique coastal appeal.

Highlights include:

• Unparallelled natural beauty: Oregon’s Adventure Coast is home to incredible cliff formations and thunderous Pacific surf, not to mention miles of pristine sandy beaches and ancient coastal forests. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area showcases 31,500 acres of golden sand dunes from Florence to North Bend, and scores of serene lakes, rivers and bays add aquatic accents throughout the region.
• Limitless adventures: Whether it’s crabbing off the docks, grinding a mountain bike through the world-class Whiskey Run trails, casting a line for surfperch on the beach, cruising the dunes, forest bathing amongst the trees, teeing off with an ocean view or paddling as the sun sinks low, there’s adventures galore on Oregon’s Adventure Coast.
• Singular scenic drives: Lighthouses, Pacific Ocean overlooks, state parks, National Wildlife Refuges – all are part of some of the area’s amazing scenic drives along the storied Highway 101 on the southern Oregon Coast.
• Coastal community charm: The quaint towns of Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston welcome visitors to the coast with fresh, local seafood, farm-to-table eateries and other dining options. There are also craft brews, artisan shops, unique museums and theatres.

The new daily nonstop flights depart Denver daily at 11:15 a.m.

A New Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration Now Enrolling Students for Fall 2025

Lakewood, CO – Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) is excited to introduce a new Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Administration program. This is the college’s fourth bachelor’s degree program, along with cybersecurity, secure software development, and water quality management technology. Red Rocks was one of the first community colleges in the state of Colorado to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science degree, introducing the BAS in water quality management in 2016.

The Colorado Community College System (CCCS) defines the Bachelor of Applied Science as a career-oriented degree typically built on the Associate of Applied Science degree. The BAS focuses on providing hands-on experiences and incorporating job-related skills into the classroom with the goal of giving students a foundation to advance their careers.

Now Enrolling for Fall 2025

The BAS in Business Administration is now enrolling students. New and current Red Rocks students can earn one of five stackable business AAS degrees to complete the first two years of the BAS curriculum. Those AAS degrees include accounting paraprofessional, accounting technician, business – interdisciplinary, business administration, and business – real estate.

Students who hold Red Rocks associate degrees in one of the above business or accounting disciplines and those who graduated with one of those AAS degrees in May 2025 can continue their education at Red Rocks and complete the BAS in Business Administration as soon as May 2027. Learn more about the admission process.

The college will continue to offer an Associate of Arts in Business that is intended to transfer to a four-year Colorado institution, where students can earn a bachelor’s degree (and go on to earn a master’s degree).

“I believe so strongly in the amazing students we have here at Red Rocks,” says Stephanie Schooley, chair of the Business and Accounting Department and business faculty member. “Students who come here are seeking cost-effective ways to earn an education and develop the business acumen to set themselves up for success. I’m excited the college now offers this BAS

in business administration degree, which will enable students to advance their careers in local businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations in our community. We all win when our students are successful.”

The new President’s Dream Grant Fund invited faculty, staff, and student leadership groups to dream big and propose projects that will make the college better.

Lakewood, CO – In May 2025, Red Rocks Community College awarded 14 one-time grants ranging from $5,000 to $250,000—a total of approximately $850,000—as part of the President’s Dream Grant Fund initiative.

The grant fund was announced in January 2025 by Red Rocks President Landon Pirius. All college faculty, staff, and student leadership groups were invited to submit grant proposals that would support the President’s priorities of:

1) enhance the Red Rocks workforce,
2) increase workforce innovation and economic mobility,
3) become the partner of choice for employers and communities,
4) become the college of choice for students and families, and

And achieve one or more of the following:

• Improve the student experience.
• Enhance academic programs.
• Beautify or improve the functioning of RRCC’s campuses.
• Drive employee engagement.
• Grow partnerships.

“The people who teach, work, and learn at Red Rocks Community College know best what we need to deliver on our promise to provide students with opportunities to grow, develop, and achieve their career objectives,” says Dr. Pirius. “I introduced the President’s Dream Grant Fund at the beginning of this year, eager to see what ideas our community would have to move our college forward and make a positive, lasting impact. Denver Seminary is pleased to welcome Dr. Tremper Longman—renowned Old Testament scholar, professor, and author—as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Shannon Preaching Lectureship and Seminar to be held June 2–5 on its Littleton campus. This 3.5-day event will focus on Big Idea Expository Preaching from the Book of Psalms.

Dr. Longman, Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Westmont College, has written over 30 books including commentaries on Genesis, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Daniel, and Nahum. Recent books include “Confronting Old Testament Controversies: Pressings Questions about Evolution, Sexuality, History, and Violence” and “The Bible and the Ballot: Using Scripture in Political Decisions.” Dr. Longman’s books have been translated into 17 different languages.

Dr. Longman will lead ministry leaders, pastors, students, faculty, and others through lectures on 12 selected Psalms, offering expert exegesis and theological insight. In conjunction with these lectures, attendees will engage in sermon development sessions designed to help them prepare a sermon series for use in their local ministry contexts.

Group discussion and peer learning will be facilitated by Dr. Matt Wolf, pastor of Arise Church Denver, and Rev. David Ward, director of Denver Seminary’s Compelling Preaching Initiative. Together, they will help participants reflect on how to faithfully and compellingly communicate the Psalms to contemporary congregations.

“The Psalms have long given voice to the full range of human experience before God—from lament to joy, from fear to faith,” said Rev. Ward. “This seminar is a rare opportunity for pastors and ministry leaders to immerse themselves in these texts with the guidance of one of the Church’s most respected Old Testament scholars. Our hope is that participants leave both inspired and equipped to preach with depth, creativity, and pastoral sensitivity.”

The seminar is open to participants at a cost of $175. Denver Seminary is located at 6399 South Santa Fe Drive, Littleton, 80120.
